AUBURN – For One Child-Twice as Nice thrift store in Auburn not only gives back to the local community, but the Jamaican community as well.
The store celebrates its grand opening on Saturday January 8 at 10 a.m.
For One Child Foundation strives to provide comfortable learning environments for children in rural and remote schools in Jamaica. The US-based nonprofit was started by Racquel Knight from Jamaica. While in high school, Knight found it increasingly difficult to find the comfort of a chair and desk each school day.
“Since 2017, we’ve provided over 600 chairs and desks and thousands of books to 14 schools in three parishes across Jamaica,” Knight said.
During his college days, Knight began to reflect on his experiences in Jamaica. Knight founded One Chair 4 One Child while a student at Former Becker College in Worcester, where she obtained a degree in Global Citizenship in 2018.
Knight’s primary mission for the Thrift Store is to provide quality products to its customers while keeping prices affordable and raising funds to help children in Jamaica.
“Our thrift store includes clothing for men, women, youth and children, shoes, belts, scarves and small household items. We also have children’s toys, ”Knight said. “Let’s just say it’s our way of presenting a little bit of Worcester on a global platform. ”
Collaborating was nothing new for Knight, and she put her dreams to work with For One Child’s director of fundraising, Faith Whitney.
Whitney joined the team in 2018 and has helped the organization raise tens of thousands of dollars to help children in Jamaica.
“(Whitney’s) dedication to the mission of our organization and to this thrift store is truly amazing and inspiring,” said Knight.
Knight is currently pursuing his MBA at Western Governors University. She registered the One Chair 4 One Child project as a nonprofit organization in Massachusetts.
