Tiger Woods was not wearing the iconic Nike swoosh on his feet when he took to the green on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Instead, Woods was spotted wearing a pair of black FootJoy Premier Series-Packard golf shoes.

The sight of the home course of the legendary Masters tournament, which kicks off on Thursday, has sparked much speculation in the golfing world – and was met with a vague statement from Nike.

“Like golf fans around the world, we are thrilled to see Tiger back on the course,” Nike said in a statement. “He’s an incredible athlete, and it’s phenomenal to see him return to the game at this level. His story continues to transcend the sport and inspire us all. As he continues his comeback, we will work with him to respond. to his new needs.”

FootJoy is owned by the publicly traded company Acushnet. A representative for Acushnet did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The flap of the shoes also slightly moved investors. Shares of Acushnet rose about 2% in early trading, while shares of Nike fell less than 1%.

Some have suggested the change could be down to Woods’ horrific car crash last February, which left him seriously injured in his legs. That might have left him looking for more comfortable options for his feet.

Woods, who turned pro in 1996, has been affiliated with Nike throughout his career. He even has his own pair of golf shoes with sneaker giant, Nike Air Zoom Tiger Woods. To be sure, he still wore the embellished swoosh logo on his coral-colored polo shirt on Sunday.

Woods did not comment specifically on his shoe choices this weekend, but took to social media to say he will make a “game-time decision” whether or not to attend the Masters. Should be played, it would mark their first competition since November 2020.

His last major championship victory came in 2019 at Augusta National, his fifth Masters title overall.
