New shoe store tries to revitalize Corpus Christi’s Westside

Born and raised in Corpus Christi’s Westside, Terald Clay grew up shopping at Beall’s and other stores in the Saxet Mall.

More than 50 years later, Clay noticed that his neighborhood businesses had dissipated as stores began to open in the Southside.

“My mom used to buy me shoes and clothes in our neighborhood,” Clay said. “Now, when I drive in the same neighborhood, there’s nothing here.… There aren’t any clothing or shoe stores in this neighborhood within 15 miles.”

With two businesses already under his belt, Clay decided to invest the money he had in trying to revive his community and opened Royal 6 Shoe Company on Black Friday.

The store’s name comes from Clay’s three sons wearing the number 6 for their Miller High School soccer jerseys.

The shoe and clothing store offers brands such as Puma, Nike and New Balance. Clothing sizes range from small to 5X for men, women, and kids.

To give more back to the community, Clay pledged that a percentage of each shoe sale will go directly to Ronald McDonald House Charities South Texas.

Daejon Bisby, an employee and nephew of Clay, said it was his first job in retail, but it was nice to work with his family and people he knew well.

“We have a good variety of stuff and a bit of something for everyone,” Bisby said. “Most of the things we have here, you can find them at the mall. The difference is, ours is more reasonably priced.”

Terald Clay is being held at his store, Royal 6 Shoe Company, on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. Clay opened the store on Friday, November 26 on Leopard Street.

Within a week of the store’s debut, Matthew Hernandez had already become a regular at Royal 6 Shoe Company, as it’s a faster commute for him than going to La Palmera Mall.

“I grew up in this neighborhood and Royal 6 is ideal for this neighborhood,” Hernandez said. “It’s great to see a store like this open on this side of town. It’s necessary.”

Clay said he was excited about the growth of his new business. He said he is open to suggestions from customers and wants to make sure they are happy with their visit.

“It’s not just about making money – it’s about what you can do to make the community make it better,” Clay said. “The money will come if you do something right for your neighborhood. They come first. “
