“It’s a Community, Not Just a Shoe Store,” TerraLoco Celebrates 10 Years in Business in Rochester


August 9 – ROCHESTER – Tiffany Piotrowicz never saw herself becoming a store owner in 2013 when she started working at TerraLoco, a local footwear and sportswear supplier. Two years later, she ended up buying the store and has been running it ever since.

“I’ve really been here, basically, the whole time the store has been open. First as a manager, then I started doing shopping and social media,” Piotrowicz said.

The store opened in 2012 under the ownership of three John Marshall High School graduates: Brock Quimby, Jeremy Hensel and Darrell Thompson. In August 2015, the three owners decided to part ways with the store and passed ownership to Piotrowicz. Since then, Piotrowicz has learned a lot to become the business leader she is today.

“It was just totally out of the blue and not something I really expected at the time. But it was too good an opportunity to pass up. And you learn that the things that you are passionate about or why you started the business in the first place. You don’t always end up doing a lot when you’re in the action as an owner,” Piotrowicz said.

When TerraLoco first opened, each ownership group still aimed to be heavily involved in the Rochester community.

TerraLoco is well known for their 5K Charity Runs, which they currently hold every Monday at 6 p.m., where participants register for $5 and proceeds go to a local charity chosen by TerraLoco. The store is also a major sponsor of the annual Med City Marathon.

Piotrowicz explained how important community involvement is to herself and her employees so that the store remains more than just a place to buy sports equipment.

“I think what makes us special is that it’s a community as opposed to just a shoe store. Without all these events that we used to do, pre-COVID, that sense of community n “It’s not as strong as it used to be. It’s something I really want to make sure we focus on in the years to come to kick-start that community involvement,” Piotrowicz said.

Piotrowicz said she hopes TerraLoco’s community presence matches that of her friend Nadia Victoria’s family businesses; Victoria’s and Sorellina’s. The latter opened two months ago across 16th Street SW from TerraLoco.

With 10 years of celebrations underway throughout August for TerraLoco, community events are popping up all over Rochester that anyone can attend. Some of these community events include an upcoming VIP weekend this Saturday, August 13, 2022 and Sunday, August 14, 2022, with in-store offers. There is also a month-long cross-country competition with a $250 donation reward to the team with the most runners involved.

One of the biggest changes in TerraLoco’s 10 years of operation is its transformation into a majority female owned and operated business. Piotrowicz is the sole owner of TerraLoco but only has female managers, including his sister Mallory.

“It’s something I’ve been leaning into a bit more lately because I think it’s something that people find important to want to support their local businesses,” Piotrowicz said. “I don’t like to call myself a minority, because I’m a white woman, but I think more importantly, for our company in particular, it’s at least 75% women, and my entire management team is also feminine.

As TerraLoco prepares for the next decade of operation in Rochester, community involvement and a welcoming in-store environment are the most important goals for the store, Piotrowicz said. She has always seen her store as a place where people are welcomed into racing without the feeling of intimidation for those entering the world of racing for the first time.

“Going to a racer-only store, first-time buyers sometimes worry about regular racers who are going to judge them,” Piotrowicz said. “I think it’s for men and women, but more for women. So to have people walk in the door and see people who look like them, and you know, we’re not all race runners. ultra marathon, I think it immediately puts people at ease.”
