On May 26, 2022, the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center hosted one of the sessions of the 25th International Research and Application Conference “Fashion and Design: Historical Experience – New Technologies”.
The conference was organized by the State Hermitage in collaboration with the Russian Ethnographic Museum and the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. In keeping with tradition, the in-depth study of clothing, footwear and textile articles from various eras and countries was the focus of the conference participants’ attention. Emphasis was placed this year on the use of new technologies and the emergence of new trends, recycling and upcycling.
The session at Staraya Derevnya was largely devoted to the Hermitage’s textile collections, known for their rich diversity. Many of the contributions were notable for their original subject: the reuse of fabrics in 16th and 19th century Europe; the reworking of women’s dress in Russia from the mid-1850s to the 1870s; the use of fashionable vintage patchwork pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries. There were also lectures on traditional topics for the Hermitage, including restoration and new assignments of textile items.
Conference participants visited the famous costume gallery of the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center.
