In 1986, Michael Jordan signed a pair of shoes for Italy’s private VIP airport manager and confirmed the story 36 years later

Michael Jordan is currently in Italy, having the time of his life. He makes many people happy with his presence, including a manager who recently sold cigars at His Airness. He is having a blast in the European country, as he was recently spotted dressing all in white to attend a party while on a boat with legendary actor George Clooney.

It looks like Jordan has brought a lot of joy to the people of Italy, with a story confirming just how great and humble this man is. A private VIP airport manager had the opportunity to show MJ his signature Air Jordans and grabbed it, uncovering a big story behind his legendary kicks.

Marco Guglielmetti recently shared the story of how his cousin gave him a pair of 1985 Jordans signed by young Michael. The signature was different back then, but Marco still treasured the shoes. A few days ago, he had the chance to meet Jordan at the airport to confirm if it was his old signing.

Going through The Gazzetta dello Sport:

The image shows them smiling together, while Marco holds up a pair of Nikes – red and black, precision superfluous – on which the NBA legend’s autograph stands out. It is from these shoes that the story begins.

This model dates from 1985. The following year, Luigi, Marco’s cousin residing in the United States, manages to find a way to have them signed by a young Michael Jordan. His rise would begin soon after, first as an individual dominator and then, in the 1990s, as the star of one of the most successful teams of all time, the Phil Jackson-led Chicago Bulls. After this signing, Luigi never wore them again. He treasured them for someone special. On Marco’s 23rd birthday, unsurprisingly, he gives them to her. Also because he was born in 1985, like these shoes. “Looking at this handwriting, I always doubted that the autograph was not authentic. Also because looking for his signature online, it looks very different”.

The opportunity to reveal the mystery materialized last Saturday, July 23 for fans of numbers and coincidences. “I knew it would take off that day, so not too much hope I took the shoes with me to show him, but I would have just seen him from a distance. We had also been warned that he wouldn’t didn’t want to be approached by anyone and the attitude of his bodyguards was quite clear in this sense. After the usual checks, he was alone for a few moments. A colleague said to me, “Go ahead, it’s your time”. I approached, apologizing for the inconvenience, and I didn’t want a picture or an autograph. But I proudly showed him the shoes and asked him if he had indeed signed as That at the time. And yes, he confirmed it: the autograph is authentic.

MJ recommended that Marco take care of the shoes and not sell them, which wasn’t even on his mind. He had an amazing time meeting the greatest basketball player of all time, having a moment he will never forget.

As soon as he landed, Michael Jordan took the NBA by storm, instantly becoming a Chicago fan favorite and one of the most intriguing players in the entire association. The six-time NBA champion showed flashes of his quality very quickly, and when his first signature shoes dropped, a lot of people wanted to get them.

Good to see some fans cherish the shoes, especially if they’re signed by legends like Jordan. MJ didn’t want to be bothered by a lot of people at the airport, but it’s nice to know that he still took the time to speak with this person and confirm his life story.
