Hereford shoe store turns 150 as store manager retires

A HEREFORDSHIRE store manager retires after 49 years as the store celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Nick King began his shoe career in 1971 aged just 16, as a Saturday boy working for his father at Peter Briggs shoes in Shrewsbury.

Now 65, Mr King took over running the company’s store in Widemarsh Street, Hereford, when he was 19.

As a bachelor, he lived in the apartment above the store for a few years before meeting and marrying his wife, Sue.

In 2007, Mr Robin took over the Hereford and Ludlow Briggs stores and renamed them Robin Elt Shoes, but Mr King remained with them as part of the fixtures and fittings.

This year, Mr King made the difficult decision to retire and spend some quality time at home and in his beloved garden, with his wife Sue, children Emma and Rich and four grandchildren.

Emily Waldron, Robin Elt Shoes Regional Manager, said: “The entire Robin Elt Shoes team wishes Nick all the best and a very happy retirement.

“Nick was a great personality in store and will be greatly missed by the team, the business and his Hereford customers.

“He is a real character, with a knowledge of footwear second to none, he has delighted many customers over the years with his wit, expert knowledge of footwear and personal service.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick for his many years of support in the business and wish him the best in his retirement.”

The new manager starting today (May 2).

“She can’t wait to meet all of our lovely customers in store,” Ms. Waldron said.
