Former Lewis College of Business in Detroit, Michigan is making history after being resurrected by one of the biggest names in shoe and clothing design.

The college operated from 1928 to 2013 before closing due to financial problems and will now become the first HBCU in the country to officially reopen, giving hope to the 104 similar establishments that until recently made up a significant chunk of the billions of dollars. from President Biden. Rebuild better spending plan.

The school offers free room and board as well as tuition fees to students interested in pursuing a career in design. Its website promotes a learning-by-doing approach that will help train students across multiple disciplines, including strong course offerings in STEM, sustainability, business, and design.

Renamed Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design, the reinvented institution takes its name from Pensole Design Academy, a Portland, Oregon-based nonprofit founded in 2010 by former Nike design director D’Wayne Edwards.

“Diversity of thought is what creates innovation. I really hope what we’re doing inspires other state colleges with HBCUs to do the same, ”Edwards told the Michigan NPR station.

Edwards said the classes would be heavily influenced by donor companies like Target, and that he was inspired for the redesign by the original college’s namesake, businesswoman and educator Violet Temple Davis.

“HBCUs are some of the brightest minds in our country, but they don’t have access to design education. We are here to change that, ”said the founder.

The college will begin enrolling students in December, with classes scheduled to start in March. Initial classes will be held at the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education at the College for Creative Studies. The PLA has submitted the necessary forms and will await accreditation from the Michigan Department of Education. Admissions and other college information can be found here when available.
