The DESIGNwith studio brings together universities, businesses and the community to democratize both learning and design through public research, workshops and exhibitions.

TORONTO, June 23, 2022 /CNW/ – With a commitment to community and sustainability, Cadillac Fairview (CF) has partnered with DESIGNwith and OCAD University to launch a new design incubator in Toronto. Opened today, the DESIGNwith studio at the CF Toronto Eaton Center will bring together a wide range of designers, students and community members, and serve as a learning lab dedicated to exploring the circular economy to create a sustainable social good.

“We are proud to open the DESIGNwith studio alongside our passionate partners, showcasing the powerful social impact we can achieve together,” said Jason AndersonSenior Vice President, Brand and Marketing, Cadillac Fairview. “This is a one-of-a-kind experience for Cadillac Fairview and as long-time urban builders, we are thrilled that one of our largest commercial buildings in the world can purposefully serve our community as a common ground for design, research and knowledge sharing. think. »

Strengthening the fabric of our community and our planet

Located on Level 2 (between the Dundas Street station entrance and Canadian Tire), the studio will operate daily as an incubator space for OCAD University students, a resident student, designers and community members who will use the space to research, learn and share their exploration of the circular economy through courses, research and hands-on design. Throughout the year, DESIGNwith will be open to the public for ticketed events, starting with a sneaker-making workshop, circular design student exhibit and natural dyeing classes.

The vision to create a space that minimizes ecological impact also helped influence its design. The 635 square foot studio was built with 40% reused materials through thoughtful design by partners Design Workshop Architects. These items were salvaged from other CF locations and previously served as store fixtures, including the front doors and windows as well as the track lighting inside.

“We are delighted to extend our collaboration with Cadillac Fairview following the success of last year’s CF Art Corridor Project on Yonge Street, located above the CF Toronto Eaton Centre, which made public art more accessible to the community,” said Ana Serrano, President and Vice-Chancellor of OCAD University. “With this new initiative, we are excited to create a place where the public can learn about the impact of design on everyday objects through hands-on learning and workshops.”

Students and professionals innovate together

Among the makers and designers who are part of the DESIGNwith studio are Katia KoroscilDESIGNwith intern, and Ernesto Ramirezfurniture design intern Durango, Mexico; both students are in their third year of industrial design at OCAD University. The two students co-designed a collection of furniture for use in the incubator space with the industrial design professor Ranee Lee and Lee Fletcher, founding partner of Fig40 and director of Fletcher Scott Studio. Studio furniture is designed with durability, flexibility and affordability in mind, and is made with easy-to-use dimensional lumber and readily available fasteners. This achieves the goal of sharing designs that are producible for anyone, by anyone.

“As an instructor at OCAD University, it is always a pleasure to see my students get out into the community and work for social good,” said Ranee Lee, founder of DESIGNwith. “The DESIGNwith studio is also an opportunity to level the playing field for learning and design, which is often out of reach for many in our own city. We are grateful to Cadillac Fairview for opening up this important community space for us, because it’s really only by approaching the community differently that we can hope to achieve different results.”

Also joining the space is DESIGNwith’s resident student, Deanna Badi–an industrial designer focused on environmental sustainability. Badi is working on grant-funded research to produce a biodegradable, water-repellent solution for natural fiber outdoor jackets that she designs and sews herself.

One of the first workshops held at the DESIGNwith studio will be led by a shoe designer Nelson Silva, which has more than 20 years of professional experience in the field and focuses on sustainability and innovation in footwear. Her five-week sneaker workshop will use recycled fabrics for shoemaking, as part of DESIGNwith’s goal to democratize design and knowledge through teaching and making. These workshops are open to the public, but half of the places will be offered to marginalized members of the community and students to ensure equity and inclusion.
