Andrew Wiggins saved shoes, explained: Switching from PEAK to Nike Kobe pays playoff dividends for Warriors forward

Is it the shoes? The money must be the shoes.

Spike Lee asked Michael Jordan this question in the iconic Nike brandingof the late 80s and early 90s.

And while it certainly wasn’t the shoes that got Mike flying, for the Golden State Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins, it might be.

Since Game 4 of the Dubs’ series with the Grizzlies, Wiggins has gone from PEAK sneakers to Kobe’s signature Nike sneakers with a taped logo, and his game since has been elite.

In the seven games since the switch, he’s averaging 16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while playing tenacious defense against Mavericks star Luka Doncic.

Must be the shoes right?

It’s not the first time this season, however, that Wiggins has moved from PEAK to Kobes.

How long has Andrew Wiggins been wearing Kobes?

Wiggins has worn Kobe Bryant’s iconic Nike sneakers at various stages of the season.

He was first spotted in the Kobe VI Proto All-Star in early October during the Warriors’ preseason games.

Again, the Nike logo had been registered and the sneaker world was buzzing with talk, with Wiggins having been a PEAK endorser for a few years now. The explanation behind the change was that Wiggins’ feet had gotten bigger over the summer and that PEAK was preparing new Big Triangle sneakers (the model he wore until then) for him.

Oddly enough, though, that wasn’t the last time we’ve seen Wiggins in a non-PEAK sneaker this season.

He was still wearing the Kobe VI Protro when he made that huge dunk on Karl-Anthony Towns in mid-November.

During the first two weeks of December, he was spotted in the Nike Kobe AD Exodus during games against the Spurs and 76ers.

In a March 27 game against the Washington Wizards, Wiggins wore the Kobe IV Protro Draft Day – this time with no Nike logo obscured.

A few days later, on April 1, he was spotted in the Air Jordan 36 for a game against the Denver Nuggets.

What is the status of Wiggins sneakers?

At the start of the 2020-21 NBA season – Wiggins’ first full season with Golden State – he announced he would sign an endorsement deal with Chinese shoe brand PEAK.

“I am delighted to join the PEAK family,” he wrote on Twitter.

Wiggins has signed a multi-year agreement with the Chinese brand. Former and current NBA players such as Dwight Howard, Lou Williams and Tony Parker have signed shoe deals with Peak in the past.

Earlier this year, ESPN’s Nick DePaula announced Wiggins would be getting his own signature shoe with the company slated for release in June 2021.

Prior to signing with PEAK, Wiggins was part of the adidas NBA team in Adidas Basketball. Once that contract expired, he was seen wearing various Nike styles over the course of a few seasons before the PEAK deal came to fruition.
