Give me a time machine, and I’ll dial the number 1-9-9-7. September 1997, to be exact: the weekend before the first day of school, which puts me in the mall in a town in Midwestern Minnesota. My family and I choose my shoes for the year, but since I was seven my feet have grown an inch or so every two months, so this won’t be the last time. But that’s the most special since my mom buys me a pair of sparkly black Platform Sketchers, and they remind me of the galaxy and they make me feel cool and special.

Fast forward to now: I’m a shopping editor who tries on and buys dozens and dozens of shoes every year. I love shoes, but it’s hard to find a shoe that elicits the same kind of childish joy that it did in 1997 at the Mall of America. But, spoiler alert, I made find this shoe recently. In late September, Everlane released the ReLeather Tennis Shoe, a vintage-inspired sneaker created with recycled leather that is soft, durable, and requires absolutely no break-in time.

I’ve been wearing my ReLeather pair for about two months – the first day I wore them I ended up walking all day through the apple orchards of the San Bernardino Mountains. I forgot I was even testing a new pair of shoes. Since then, I have worn them when walking my dogs around the neighborhood, training indoors, and shopping. It’s the first pair of shoes I grab when I need something easy and will go with everything without forcing me to think too much.

The ReLeather Tennis Shoe style is simple: it’s a rounded toe shoe with a low ankle, and you can get it in four different colors (I chose white over white with a rubber sole, but you can get your white sneakers with papaya (yellow), rubber sole (brown-beige) or pale pink sole for a little contrast). These shoes offer good bounce (but probably won’t give you the support you need with a sports trainer or if you need something to run on) and maximum comfort. They are also true to size (in my experience).

For a more vintage and gym class look and feel, Everlane also has the ReLeather Court Sneaker, which comes in six colourways. It reminds me (in terms of looks) of the Nike Air Force 1, minus the high top shoes. These ankles are still low, but you play with the colors a bit more compared to the tennis shoe, and they are slightly thicker. (For full disclosure I haven’t tested them, but I a m buy a pair.)

Whether you are looking for a good pair of tennis shoes to relive the one happiness that comes with back-to-school shopping at a suburban mall, or just need a pair of high-quality, well-fitting sneakers to match. your closet, I give the Everlane ReLeather tennis shoe an A +.
