Mangaluru: This is an opportunity for young people to have their sneaker proposal evaluated by a jury made up of divinities from the streetwear and sneaker scene. The contest is the brainchild of ‘Laceless Design’, the world’s most collaborative footwear design consultancy, in association with footwear industry giant Desma. The competition is named #Lacelesschallenge Design for Manufacture 4.0.
The organizers created this initiative in response to COVID-19, where they believed young people needed opportunities in music, innovation, technology and design. Their goal was to provide life-changing prizes for winners so they could turn their passion into a career. Many fashion awards offer mentorship and internships in addition to cash, but few are dedicated to the streetwear category.
And here we have our young product designer George Eliot, based in his hometown, who is vying to win the international laceless shoe design competition, being one of four finalists in the competition. Eliot George, 31, from Mangaluru, graduated from the National Institute of Design (NID) and works as a product consultant in Mumbai. He is an alumnus of St Aloysius PU College, Mangaluru. He is the first and only one for India to reach this dizzying height in this global contest.
Giving details of the contest to Team Mangalorean, Eliot said, “It’s an internationally renowned contest and I’m the only Indian to make the shortlist. A total of 300 applications were received, of which the jury selected 32 in the first round. Entries were then followed by three rounds of selection. In the final, the top four designs selected by online voting were selected for the final round. Online voting for the final round is underway. I am happy to be one of them also in India, and I am sure to be the winner of the contest.
In response to a question about why the challenge is being held, Eliot replied, “It’s about creating shoe designs that are both modern and durable. From design to manufacturing, shoemaking is defined by past processes, so the competition is all about designing future shoes using the latest technologies. If one of them wins, a prototype of their shoe design will be created. The idea will also be transformed into a product and made available on the market. The Laceless Design is collaborating with Desma for this challenge, who will manufacture the winning design with a mono-material base (TPU/PU).
“The event itself is hard to get into, but my time at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad gave me insight into creating designs that can be very attractive, durable, comfortable and modular. development of this model took me a few weeks to conceptualize and produce the design.The product is designed in such a way that the user can change the soles, the body and the interior padding without compromising on quality and comfort.This aspect is what most manufacturers and consumers are looking for,” said Eliot.
George was in the bottom eight of a league of last 32 competitors and the vote was taking place even when this correspondent spoke to him. If he passes the final, German shoe design major – Desma will produce his design. Even in college, George came to the National Institute of Design which has only 100 students a year and he happened to be one of four from Karnataka.
