Beginning in 2021, The Walt Disney Company has radically shifted its retail focus from traditional mall stores and flagship locations – such as those in New York’s Times Square and Paris’s Champs Elysees – to both the online space and stores like those that exist in Target stores in the United States.

Prior to Disney’s confirmation on March 3, 2021 that they were going to “significantly reduce” the number of Disney Store locations, there were over 300 Disney stores. Since December 21, International business time reported that the number of “retail stores Disney is closing is estimated to leave the retailer with approximately two dozen locations.”
For Disney fans who don’t live near Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, or Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, visiting their local Disney Stores has brought a touch of magic to everyday life. Fans have found themselves devastated by the hundreds of store closures, but there is now a silver lining for those who reside in (or frequently visit) the Orlando area.

Progress is underway on the newly reimagined Disney outlet on Orlando’s International Drive (I-Drive).
In June 2021, Orlando Business Journal shared some details about the project:
…[Disney sought permission from Orange County] to build a gargantuan ribbon-shaped art exhibit at 8050 International Drive on the Hollywood Plaza garage, the Orange County Archives show. The entertainment giant is teaming up with Japanese company Mitsubishi to install and maintain the dynamic art…

the OBJ article also noted that a store would be part of the project. Now, Click Orlando reports:
“We learned a lot from setting up the 50th art installations in our parks and at Orlando International Airport and we wanted to spread some of that magic around the world,” said Will Gay, director of the design at Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group. “It all started with a small idea and a question – could we do this? Could we turn this into a dynamic art exhibit bigger than anything we’ve ever done before? »

The new article went on to share that the new Disney Store will open on May 31 and will “combine merchandise, ticket sales, and the Disney Vacation Club’s first-ever interactive Virtual Discovery Station.”
At this time, it remains unclear whether this new Disney retail concept will be scaled to include other locations in the United States and around the world.
