  • Towel
  • Mild soap

  • Baking soda
  • Shoe protectors

2nd step: Take a soft-bristled brush and scrub your sneakers to remove any dirt and debris, making sure your shoes are dry beforehand.

Step 3: Mix a small amount of shoe cleaner, like this Angelus Easy Cleanser, with another bowl of warm water and dip a clean, soft-bristled brush into the mixture. Use the shoe cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4: Gently work the surface of your shoes with the brush until dirt and stains have been removed.

Step 6: Remove your laces from their soaking and let them dry with your canvas shoes before retying them. Check out our guide to lacing Vans and Converse shoes here for our top tips.

Trick : Stuffing your shoes with old newspaper beforehand can help ensure that your shoes retain their shape while drying.

What about white canvas shoes?

Many people turn to bleach to clean white shoes; however, we advise against it as it is a particularly harsh chemical that can permanently damage your sneakers if not applied correctly.

We recommend using baking soda instead for tough stains, as listed in our guide to cleaning white cloth shoes and white sneakers.

Mix a tablespoon of warm water with a tablespoon of baking soda to obtain a pasty mixture.

Use an old toothbrush to scrub the surface of your shoes in a circular motion using this paste. Once dry, your shoes should be bright white again.

Things to Avoid When Cleaning Canvas Shoes

It’s important to treat your canvas sneakers carefully when cleaning, as just one wrong move or product could lead to irreversible and permanent damage.

As mentioned in our Jordan 1 cleaning guide, we strongly advise against cleaning your canvas shoes in a washing machine or dryer.

The intensity of the spin, water and heat can damage the delicate material, often resulting in fabric wear and seam separation.

Similarly, avoid soaking the canvas in too much water as this can weaken the fibers of the material over time.

We also advise against using any soap that contains harsh chemicals. Soap can dry out your shoes, even stain them in some cases, permanently damaging them.

We also suggest that you avoid using direct heat or sunlight to speed up the drying process. Heat can warp your shoes and sunlight can bleach some colored fabrics.

Finally, avoid using wire brushes or rough sponges as they can sometimes pull apart the threaded fabric and seams that are difficult to secure afterwards.
