When you feel pain or weakness in your ankle, you cannot wear just any type of shoes. For example, running shoes – aka some of the most comfortable shoes on the market – don’t always fit the bill.

“High top shoes are great for extra structure and support to prevent ankle injuries,” says Dr. Dan Geller, board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and consultant for Kane Footwear. “Running shoes aren’t always the best for people with weak ankles, as some can even cause you to roll,” says Dr. Geller.

What causes ankle pain and weakness?

What exactly causes ankle pain and weakness is complicated, as it varies from person to person. For starters, Dr. Geller says, “some people have weak ankles as a byproduct of loose ligaments from birth.” It also states that ankle sprains or injuries can lead to pain and weakness in the ankles. According to American Podiatric Medical Association, the best way to prevent ankle injuries or activity-related sprains is to warm up properly before exercising, in addition to wearing the right shoes.

What to Look for in the Best Shoes for Ankle Support

If you have ankle issues, pain, or injuries, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor to find out which shoes are best for your specific problem. But in general, Dr. Geller recommends shoes with “a wide, stable platform and a deep heel cup to better stabilize the foot and ankle.”

What about ankle supports?

Along with supportive shoes, Dr. Geller says investing in ankle supports can be beneficial, but it depends on the type you buy and how often you wear them.

“Always wearing a brace can actually destabilize your ankle from lack of movement,” says Dr. Geller. “Custom orthotics can be a great way to better control rearfoot and ankle movement without restricting sagittal plane movement. Dr. Geller notes that he makes them for many high-level basketball players because they tend to have suffered “multiple sprains and developed weak ankle ligaments over the years”.

Ultimately, however, Dr. Geller says the best way to solve the problem is through strength training, balance and proprioception exercises.

From walking to hiking, shop the best shoes for ankle support, according to Dr. Geller and enthusiastic shoppers.

The LeBron Witness 5 is a lightweight basketball shoe with responsive cushioning and a stiff heel for support. One reviewer said, “This Lebron shoe feels great so far. In fact, I’ve played with them at least twice now, and they have great ankle support for cutting and hitting the basket.
